Join your colleagues for the Monthly Membership Luncheon to be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Our guest speaker will be Jim Muehlberger, JCBA member, Leawood lawyer and author. Jim culminated a decade's worth of research and his discovery of lost documents relating to the James brothers with the publication of his new book, The Lost Cause: The Trials of Frank and Jesse James. The book tells the true but unknown story of Jesse's calculated assassination of a former Union officer in retribution for a Civil War killing, and how a young lawyer/former Union private sued Frank and Jesse James and later prosecuted Frank James, at great personal risk, as Jesse twice tried to murder the lawyer. Combining true crime, western adventure, and the transformation of America into a modern nation, the books is engaging, entertaining history.
The book has been widely praised. Publishers Weekly describes The Lost Cause as a "fascinating story" that "works well as both a thrilling Wild West drama and an insightful portrait of a country trying to rebuild under the burden of still-simmering resentments and conflicting loyalties." Kirkus Reviews states the book is "well-researched" and "intriguing...in the larger historical context Muehlberger provides." Readers interested in Kansas and Missouri Civil War history will find it a must read.
The luncheon will be held at the Ritz Charles, 9000 W. 137th Street, Overland Park, KS. The buffet opens at 11:45 a.m. and the program will conclude by 1:00 p.m. RESERVATIONS ARE NOT REQUIRED.
